LED Therapy Side Effects — What’s Normal and What Isn’t

Близък план на червени LED диоди за светлинна терапия

LED photobiomodulation is among the procedures with the best safety profile in dermatology. However, this is not the same as "without any effects." Here's what you can realistically expect.

What is Normal

Effect Duration
Slight redness after a session 10–30 minutes
Sensation of warmth during the procedure Passes immediately
Mild skin dryness First 1–2 weeks
Afterimage in front of eyes Several minutes

All of these are expected and do not require action.

What is Not Normal

Stop and consult a dermatologist if you experience:

  • Pain or burning during the session. Correct LED therapy is painless.
  • Blisters or peeling — this is thermal damage, not photobiomodulation.
  • Redness lasting over 24 hours.
  • Darkening of spots — see LED and Melasma.
  • Visual disturbances — see eye safety.

Most of these cases are associated with devices without specified power or with poor heat dissipation.

Initial Acne Purge

Some people report a slight worsening during the first 1–2 weeks in blue light mode. This is usually transient and resolves. If it persists for more than four weeks, discontinue use.

Who is at Higher Risk

  • Taking photosensitizing medications — some antibiotics, oral retinoids, some diuretics.
  • Active rosacea — see LED for Rosacea.
  • Melasma or tendency for hyperpigmentation.
  • Recent cosmetic procedures — wait for the recommended period.

How to Reduce Risk

  1. Start with shorter sessions and 2–3 times a week.
  2. Clean, dry skin — no active serums before the procedure.
  3. Do not extend sessions — longer is not better.
  4. Hydrate after the session.
  5. Choose a device with published power in mW/cm².

Frequently Asked Questions

Can LED burn the skin? Correct non-thermal LED therapy — no. A device that heats up noticeably — yes.

Does it lead to addiction? No. There is no described rebound effect after discontinuation — the effect simply gradually diminishes.

Can I use it every day? You can, but it's not necessary. See how often to use an LED mask.
