One of the most common post-purchase questions — and one of the easiest to get wrong. The logic "more light – faster results" sounds reasonable but doesn't align with what is known about photobiomodulation.
The Short Answer
For most skin purposes: 3 to 5 times a week, for 10 to 20 minutes. For the scalp: 3 to 4 times a week for 20 to 25 minutes.
Daily use is permissible but rarely necessary. The difference in results between 4 and 7 sessions per week is small; the difference between 1 and 4 is significant.
Why More Is Not Better
Photobiomodulation follows the so-called biphasic dose dependence — a principle described by Huang and colleagues. Up to a certain dose, the effect increases. After that, it plateaus, and at very high doses, the effect decreases.
Practically: the cell needs time to respond to the stimulus. Twice as many sessions do not yield twice as much collagen. More on the mechanism can be found in the mitochondrial biology of photobiomodulation.
Protocols by Indication
| Purpose | Frequency | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Acne (blue + red) | 3–5 times a week | 10–20 min. |
| Wrinkles and collagen (red + IR) | 3–5 times a week | 10–20 min. |
| Redness and tan | 2–3 times a week | 10–15 min. |
| Scalp and hair loss | 3–4 times a week | 20–25 min. |
| Sensitive skin / rosacea | 2–3 times a week | 5–10 min. |
For scalp, details are in Hair Loss and LED Therapy. For rosacea, see the separate article.
Initial Phase vs. Maintenance
The practical approach involves two phases.
Initial phase (weeks 1–12): the higher frequency from the table. This is where the effect is built.
Maintenance phase (after 3 months): 2–3 times a week is enough to sustain the achieved results.
Important: the effect is not permanent. With complete cessation, the skin gradually returns to its initial state over several months.
If You Miss Sessions
Do not compensate with a longer session. The dose does not accumulate that way. Just continue as scheduled.
Regularity is more important than intensity. Three sessions a week for half a year yield better results than daily sessions for a month and then nothing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use it every day? You can. But it's rarely worth it — and increases the chance of giving up.
Two modes in one session? Yes, if the device allows it. The total time remains the same.
Morning or evening? See the separate article.
What if I don't see results? Before increasing the frequency, see why there are no results.
